About Southern Baptists...

We are a member of the South Carolina Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention.

Why do we exist as a church?
We are committed to loving God (Matthew 22:37), loving each other (John 15:12), and loving people to God through Jesus Christ His Son (Matthew 28:20).

We have five Biblical purposes as a church:
1. To worship God through Christ
2. To make disciples of Christ
3. To disciple believers in Christ
4. To minister in Christ's name
5. To include all believers in Christ's fellowship

What we believe as Southern Baptists . . .
1.    About God.
God is our Creator, Ruler, and Sustainer.  He eternally exists in three persons:  God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.  These three are co-equal and are one God expressed in three persons. Scripture:  Genesis 1:1,26,27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; I Peter 1:2; II Corinthians 13:14

2.    About Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is God's only Son.  He is co-equal with the Father.  God became man and was wrapped in skin, was virgin-born, and lived a sinless life.  He offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin by dying on the cross.  He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death.  He ascended to Heaven and will return again to earth to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. Scripture:  Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-115; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; I Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13

3.    About the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God.  He is present in the world to convince people that they are sinners in need of a Savior, that Jesus Christ is the Savior, and to transform them once they welcome Jesus into their lives.  He indwells every person who makes this decision for Christ.  He gives them power for living, insight into God's Word and will, guidance for doing what pleases God, and correction when they turn from God's way.  He gives every believer at least one spiritual gift for building up the Body of Christ.  We, as Christians, are commanded to be controlled by Him every day. Scripture:  II Corinthians 3:17; John 14:16-17;16:7-13; Acts 1:8; I Corinthians 2:12; 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:18

4.    About the Bible.
The Bible is God's Word to us.  It was written by 40 authors over a period of 1600 years as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.  It is our only authority for what we believe and how we live.  Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without any mixture of error. Scripture:  II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:20-21: II Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105,160; 12:6; Proverbs 30:5

5.    About people.
People are made in the image of God.  They are God's crowning creation.  Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by sin that separates us from God.  Every person has God as their Creator, but every person does not have God as their Father.  God becomes a person's Father only when they turn from sin to Christ as Lord and Savior. Scripture:  Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1-2

6.    About salvation.
We can never be right with God by doing good things or being religious.  Our sinful state demanded that someone die.  This is what Jesus did.  Through His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead, we can be saved or rescued from our sin and be forgiven.  Salvation is God's free gift to us, but we must accept it by faith in Jesus Christ.  When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus by faith, we are saved.  Eternal life begins the moment we receive Jesus Christ into our life by faith. Scripture:  Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1

7.    About eternal security.
Salvation is based on what Jesus did for us on the cross rather than on our conduct.  It is based on God's promise rather than on whether we can "hold out."  If you have been genuinely saved, you cannot lose it.  Salvation is maintained by the power and grace of God, not by our own self-effort.  He keeps us by His power until we get to heaven. Scripture:  John 10:29; II Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; 10:10,14; I Peter 1:3-5

8.    About eternity.
People were created to exist forever.  We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation.  To be eternally separated from God is hell.  To be eternally in union with Him is Heaven.  Heaven and hell are real places of eternal existence. Scripture:  John 3:16; 2:25; 5:11-13; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15 Matthew 1:8; 2:44,46

What we practice as Southern Baptists . . .

B - Bible.  The Bible is our sole authority of belief and behavior.  II Timothy 3:15
Since God's Word is the only completely reliable and truthful authority, we accept the Bible as our manual for living.  When faced with a decision, our first question should be, "What does the Bible say?"  The Bible is the basis for all that we believe.

A - Autonomy of the local church.  Colossians 1:18
Christ is the Head of our church.  No person, group, or religious organization dictates to us how to "do church."  While recognizing the value of associating and cooperating with other groups of Christians, we believe that every local church should be self-governing and free from any denominational control.

P - Priesthood of the believer.  Revelation 1:6; I Peter 2:9
The Bible teaches that every believer is called to "full time" Christian service.  Every believer is a minister and is encouraged to find a ministry.  Every believer has direct access to God.

T - Tithing.  Leviticus 26:30
We practice tithing for the support of Christ's body here as God commands.  A tithe or 10% is the beginning of the biblical standard for giving.

I - Immersion.  Colossians 2:12
We practice baptism by immersion under water.  The word in the New Testament for baptize means to dip under.  This pictures the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and our identification with Him.

S - Spirit-led living.  John 15:5
The only way to live a victorious Christian life is through the power of God within you.  We practice daily dependence on God's Spirit to enable us to do what is right.

T - Telling others about Jesus.  I Peter 3:15
It is every believer's responsibility to share the Good News with those with whom God brings us into contact.  We practice personal sharing about Christ.

What makes Southern Baptists different or distinct from other Baptists?
Southern Baptists cooperate with other Southern Baptist churches in evangelism (telling others the Good News of Jesus Christ) and in missions (making disciples of all nations of the world).  Together with other Southern Baptist churches, we support over 5000 missionaries internationally and over 4000 missionaries on the North American continent.  Through our method called the Cooperative Program, we add a percentage of our undesignated receipts to the percentage given by other Southern Baptist churches to begin new churches, to win others to Christ, and to make committed followers of Jesus Christ.  We also have hospitals, children's homes, colleges, and seminaries.  We are organized into associations (groups of churches within an area of the state), state conventions, and our national convention.  These groups do not in any way dictate to the local churches what to believe or how to carry out their function.  Their purpose is to enable the local church to carry out the Great Commission of Christ effectively.
